Dance in the Round
Come on down for DANCE IN THE ROUND!
a participatory dance event
Saturday June 4 | 4:307:30pm
Gibney Dance Center | 890 Broadway | 5th Floor | Studio 1
Welcome to DANCE IN THE ROUND 1.0, a participatory event involving Garba/Raas, the invigorating circle dance originating in Gujarat, India. This event is a collaboration between Parijat Desai (Parijat Desai Dance Company) and Heena Patel (MELA Arts Connect), and is open to all ages, backgrounds, genders/gender expressions, and abilities.
Why Garba? The dance is a great form of exercise for any level of mover, and also offers a rare experience of collective fun, with a healthy afterbuzz. Garba happens mainly during the fall Navratri (Nine Nights) season, but we know of its benefits and aim to make this energizing experience available more often.
Don't know how to play Garba? Have no fear--we'll conduct mini-lessons before each segment of the afternoon, teaching you moves that take you around the circle, as well as how to play Raas with sticks.
Already know how? Come show off your skillz! We'll guide the crowd into concentric circles so there's plenty of room to jam.
This is about community: during the event, you can take breaks as you need, and it's okay to leave early if you've got to get somewhere!
Age: 8 to 108 year. Kids under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. If you are not sure whether your kid will be comfortable, please e-mail email@example.com.
What to bring: Water bottle both to hydrate and to save plastic! If you own dandiya, please bring.
Attire: Most importantly, wear something you are comfortable moving in. A long, flared skirt or kurta top can add to the fun, but are not required.
Space is limited; please reserve your spot.
GDC is on the fifth floor. The building has a security sign-in and one human-operated elevator, so leave a few minutes to get up to Studio 1.
